Please explain why C?

Hello, I was stuck between C and D, because I thought that 'historical traditions' was analogous to the original terms and how they change in the context of language evolution(?) could someone please explain why the answer is C if the new words serve the original meaning (which means that they will not serve a new purpose as answer choice C suggests). Thanks

Hi, I think the easiest way to eliminate D is that there is no analogy for claiming when a language is "most useful"

I think we c is correct because in both cases, a new thing is created out of old things. In the passage, new meaning is assigned to existing words, in C new functions are assigned to existing parts.

Is there a typo here? I feel like it's supposed to say "innovations" not "inventions" which is actually what the passage uses, and is indeed the definition of innovation.
