Lost

I am just a bit lost with this specific section of the passage in what it is saying and as well with the question. I chose B and could use help breaking down that part of the passage and this question as a whole.

This passage as a whole is quite tough, but if I had to sum it up I'd say that the author is making a case that literacy may not have played a large role in the democratization of Athens, since much of the role of literacy was still confined to the elite. This is in opposition to scholars like Goody.

In this light, the second paragraph is trying to minimize the importance of the law giver, and of law codes in general, to the importance of democracy and its development. We see this summed up best in the second paragraphs last sentence. With this in mind, D is a good summation of the role that the discussion of the law giver plays. The author is downplaying the importance of written law in Athens' democratization.
