Diagramming intro sentence

Hi, Is it necessary or possible to diagram the first sentence?: "Efficiency and redundancy are contradictory characteristics of linguistic systems; however, they can be used together to achieve usefulness and reliability in communication." Or can we only diagram the parts of the paragraph that says "if..." Thanks

I would generally only diagram statements that contain conditional reasoning, and here we don't really have that. While we don't have to always diagram conditional logic, it can be helpful for must be true questions like this. That said I would mostly try to remember the first sentence as context rather than diagram it.
