Hi, the author here tells us that a contract exists when two parties engage for reciprocal benefits.

In the scenario described, we don't actually know if the parties engaged for reciprocal benefits. Perhaps the money was given with no expectation of reciprocal benefits, such as in some types of unconditional grants.
