Further Explanation

Can someone explain this question in depth? My anticipation was no proof=no confirmation, or something can be accepted if proved. I was not sure how the correct answer was chosen.

For this type of question, the right answer will be something that is basically a general description of what happened in the passage. Therefore I would start by just trying to give myself a high level summary of the passage.

Here we have a theory that is initially discounted because it didn't fully explain the mechanism, but was later accepted because it describes the world correctly even if we haven't fully understood the mechanism.

A doesn't seem to have anything to do with this.
B is the opposite: we still haven't identified the underlying forces
C also is opposed to the passage, better measurement enabled us to confirm a theory and didn't make anything harder to work out
D just doesn't really seem relevant, like a
E does fit, the anticipated events (continental drift) were detected and the theory was accepted even without understanding the underlying mechanism
