Hmmm?

Conceptually, I have a hard time understanding how this could be correct. Could I have a thorough explanation of this please?

Let's take a look,at the answer choices. While this does reference a specific part of the passage, we should expect the right answer to just be something that is true of the pamphlet, and since it's central to the passage I wouldn't do much prework .

Lines 7-8 explicitly contradict A

Lines 18-20 explicitly contradict B

C looks a bit more tempting, but we are told that Thoreau focused on the individual, while King on societal change in the second paragraph, so we can knock out C.

D just doesn't have any support, I don't know if I can say anything clearly disproves it, but there is no support for it either.

The first paragraph does directly support E. We are told this was his first introduction to passive resistance, which later became the core of his philosophy albeit in a slightly different context. This is a clear influence.

Hey Emil, thank you for the thorough explanation! That really cleared it up for me! I did choose C, is there any further distinction on why C is wrong?

The second paragraph focuses on the distinctions between King and Thoreau, and that main distinction that author highlights is that T was primarily interested in reform of the individual, whereas king was interested in the reform of society. This goes as far as the fact that T did not attempt to organize societal resistance to the war, which seems to directly undermine the idea that this is where king got the idea for using passive resistance for broad social change.
