Use of the word purported

Can someone tell me what this means? A synonym would be greatly appreciated.

I would say that allege or claim would be the best synonym. I think it carries a slightly negative connotation, as if there is some doubt as to the underlying claims. That is I would describe someone who claims something I don't believe as "Bob purportedly saw a ufo"
