I think that C might actually weaken the argument, albeit slightly. If c were true, then it would give a reason that their research could actually be helpful to potato yield, and that rather than being purely self interested, their research could also be in the public interest. This is a far cry from something that the author must agree with, which is what we want in necessary assumption questions. It actually slightly hurts the author.
