Not knowing the definition of a word

Hello, I got this question right but I didn't know what idiosyncratic meant until I had to search it up and realized it meant peculiar/unique to something (or someone) specific. On the test, if I find a word that I don't understand, how am I supposed to help myself?

My first approach would be to use the context. This is usually possible in the passage, but as is the case here, it's much harder to do in the answer choices. That said, I think there are still three possible approaches .

First, we can try to get a sense of if the term is positive or negative by looking at the context. This doesn't seem to helpful here.

Second, we can look to the etymology- if a word sounds a lot like another word there's a good chance they are related.

Third, we can determine the right answer based on the other four. If there are four that are clearly wrong and one which is uncertain, choose the one that is uncertain. If one looks right, one is uncertain, and three look wrong, I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about the word I didn't know.
