How is A different from B, given that they both have alternatives? I don't understand how it is determined that the wording in A rules out the alternative, while the wording in B establishes the alternative. Please explain.

It's exactly what you said- A eliminated an alternative while B establishes it! Good job understanding exactly what they are and what they do.

Your job then is to figure out what we are looking for- that is, what is the question asking us to do. As a necessary assumption, the right answer is something the author must believe, and since they must believe the alternative is not an issue for their argument, A is correct.
