Isn't John the friend?

I picked the answer that they all knew the same person because I thought the friends were talking about John and John was simply not taking into account the idea that he might be the person in question. How is that not the case?

We are told that John is certain he does not know anyone who has those qualities. If it were John, he would know of himself.
