The goal of the summer drama workshop is to ensure that only the applicants with the most highly evaluated auditions are offered scholarships. The flaw in their method of achieving this goal is that they are evaluating local and nonlocal auditions separately. Rather than giving scholarships to the top 10% of ALL of the applicants, which would guarantee that only the applicants with the most highly evaluated auditions are offered scholarships, they are giving scholarships to the top 10% of the local applicants and then to the top 10% of the nonlocal applicants. Our correct answer will point this out.

Answer choice (B) - INCORRECT

Remember that the goal of the summer workshop is to give scholarships to those applicants with the most highly evaluated auditions. The goal is not to give scholarships to those who are truly the most talented, rather those who had the most highly evaluated auditions. Don't fall into the trap of thinking those are one in the same. Even if there was an inaccurate assessment made due to audition materials, this does not effect whether scholarships are going to those applicants with the highest evaluated auditions. True, it might mean that the scholarships may not be going to the most talented, but that is not the summer workshop's goal.

Answer choice (D) - CORRECT

Why could giving scholarships to the top 10% of local applicants and top 10% of nonlocal applicants compromise the summer workshop's goal? What if, on the whole, the local applicants scored higher than the nonlocal applicants? If that was the case, then many of those local applicants who didn't quite make the cut of top 10% could still have been evaluated higher than some of the top 10% of the nonlocal applicants, yet not receive scholarships. In this way the goal of the summer workshop has been thwarted. Answer choice (D) delineates this scenario.

Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.
