Conclusion: "If the cafeteria wants to please its customers, mushroom casserole should replace one of the regular dishes as a permanent part of the menu."

Why? We know that the Acme Company offers only four main dishes at lunchtime These same four dishes have been offered for years. However, for two days, one of the four main dishes was switched out with a new dish: mushroom casserole. For those two days, more people chose the mushroom casserole than any other main dish.

Now, could there be some other reason--other than a sheer love of mushroom casserole--that these employees flocked to the new dish? Could it just be that the dish was new and the employees wanted some variety? It's quite possible.

Thus, answer choice (C) is the correct answer because it correctly delineates the flaw explained above: "a desire for variety as a reason for people's choice of mushroom casserole during the days it was offered."

If you have any specific questions on any of the other answer choices, please feel free to clarify.

Hope that clears things up! Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Why not D?

@mikeheath, happy to help!

(D) "what foods other than main dishes are regularly offered at lunchtime by the cafeteria"

We are asked to identify what the argument is most vulnerable to criticism for failing to consider. The argument is that mushroom casserole should replace one of the regular main dishes if the cafeteria wants to please its customers because more people chose mushroom casserole than any other main dish when it was recently offered. Therefore, not only is the conclusion focused on main dishes, but the argument never discusses any other type of dish. Foods other than main dishes that are regularly offered at lunchtime, such as side dishes and desserts, are therefore out of scope and irrelevant to the argument. This makes (D) incorrect.

Does that make sense? Please let us know if you have any other questions!
