We discuss two different examples about the impact of technology in the workforce.

The first example is from the first phase of the Industrial Revolution. We are told that the invention of machines whose main advantage was that they worked faster than human workers, which proved economically attractive. As a result, many of the unskilled workers in the workforce were replaced by a few skilled workers.

The second example is from the present. We are told that managers today look for technology that will allow them to replace highly paid skilled workers with a smaller number of less-skilled workers, yet again an economic advantage for the employers.

So in both scenarios, we are given examples of how employers used technology in order to make economically advantageous cuts to their workforce.

So, as you can see, answer choice (A) is clearly best illustrated by the examples in the passage: "Employers utilize new technology because it allows them to reduce labor costs."

Hope that helps! Please let us know if you have any other questions.
