Conclusion: it is not necessary to deny the fact that cigarette smoking can lead to health problems including cancer and lung disease to reject the view that tobacco companies should be held either morally or legally responsible for the poor health of smokers.

Why? Excessive consumption of candy undeniably leads to such health problems as tooth decay, but no one seriously believes that candy eaters who get cavities should be able to sue candy manufacturers.

What's the issue here? We are comparing the health risks of eating candy to the health risks of smoking tobacco, i.e. tooth decay v. cancer.

Are those comparable things? No.

We cannot compare smoking tobacco to eating candy and say since both have health risks, then they should be treated the same. Tooth decay is not fatal, whereas cancer is.

Thus, the correct answer is (E): "fails to address the striking differences in the nature of the threat to health posed by tooth decay on the on hand and cancer and lung disease on the other."

Hope that helps! Please let us know if you have any other questions.

I narrowed it down to A and E, but ultimately chose A. Can you please explain why A is incorrect? Thank you!

I too narrowed it down to A and E. Why is E the better choice?

Going to assume that A is incorrect because it says "scientifically well documented" and that's completely irrelevant
