B

Is b basically disproving the conncection that is made between the cretacious eruption and the climatic change associated with it by saying that since there's been an eruption of the same size without it the change the cretacious eruption propable didn't cause it. I didnt pick this one because it seemed too weak to me. I also ruled it out because I couldn't see where in the last paragraph they talked about climatic change. Went with E instead but as I'm looking at it is it wrong because it says extinction and the passage says marine species die out?

The theory described in the last paragraph does discuss climatic changes, i.e. gradual changes in the sea level (lines 47-49). Think about why sea level would change? Either a lot of rain, which would increase the sea level or a lot of evaporation, which would decrease the sea level. Thus, climatic change affects the sea level.

Answer choice (E) would not cast doubt on the theory since it merely gives a scenario that marine species would be much more vulnerable to extinction in. That does not mean that the volcanic eruption theory does not give way for extinction of marine species, merely that a different scenario would have been even more devastating.

Hope that helps clear things up! Please let us know if you have any other question.
