Conclusion: understanding what a word means clearly does not depend on being able to explain it.

Why? Even though most children find it very difficult to explain exactly what the words they use mean when those words do not refer to things that can be seen or touched, they are still able to use the words to convey the feelings and emotions they are obviously experiencing.

So, we need to connect the idea of be able to use a word correctly to understanding what that words means, since currently we have no information explaining why these two things are related and how we've come to our conclusion.

This is exactly what answer choice (D) does for us. It connects the dies that using a word appropriately means that person understands the meaning of that word. Therefore, the fact that these children are still able to use these words appropriately helps us conclude that despite the fact that they find it difficult to explain exactly what the words mean, they still understand what the words mean.

Hope that helps clear things up! Please let us know if you have any other questions.
