Remember that there are 4 flasks. Flask 1 is R, flask 2 is B, flask 3 is G and flask 4 is O. We know from rule number one that the product of an experiment cannot be used in further experiments. We are asked what the colors of the resulting three nonempty flasks is going to be after the student performs exactly one experiment.

Starting with answer choice (A), we see that it has two flasks that are blue. That means that we will use two flasks in an experiment to give us blue and then one of the remaining flasks not used in the experiment should have always been blue. So, the only two experiments that yield blue are from rule #3: either flask 3 and flask 1 or flask 3 and flask 4. If we take flask 3 and flask 1 in the experiment, that will give us one blue and since we still have two flasks left (those two not used in the experiment) we have one leftover blue flask, flask 2, and one leftover orange flask, flask 4.

Likewise, if we try using flasks 3 and 4 in the experiment, that will yield one blue flask, plus the leftover flasks 2 and 1, which are blue and red respectively.

Hope that helps! Please let us know if you have any other questions.
