Group Games Questions - - Question 18

If the chairperson of the committee is to be a homeowner, which one of the following must be true?

Deduction question

Hi, I'm still a bit confused as to why answer choice D was crossed out. The instructor pointed out that if FJM is selected as being in, the home owners can be R and S however I thought rule 3 recites that if F is selected the Q is selected thus shouldn't answer choice D still be valid?

Sorry for the confusion. You're correct that if F is selected, then Q is selected. However, in this situation we only have two homeowners in and three tenants in. Let's see if we can have J in and Q out because then we know (D) is not the correct answer.

If Q is out, then F is out. If J is in, we know M is in. This means we only have one more spot for a tenant to be in. So, that means G must be out, because if G were in then K would also have to be in and we only have room for three tenants since question 18 tells us that the chairperson is a homeowner. So, our three tenants in are J, M and K. If M is in, we know P is out. So our two homeowners out are Q and P, leaving R and S to be the homeowners that are in. Meaning that J can be selected, while Q is not. Thus, answer choice (D) is out.

Hope that helps! Please let us know if you have any other questions.

I'm a bit confused on this question as to why the answer isn't (C). My thinking was that if J is selected and F is selected M and Q must be selected. In that case, there is only room for one more variable, which would have to be a homeowner since at least two representatives from each group must be selected and the chair person would have to be from the group of only two representatives. So, in that case, wouldn't it have to true that a homeowner was the chair person if J and F are selected?

Hi, I'm just curious why (C) is not the answer. My think was that if J and F were selected it would make it so Q and M were selected, leaving a one spot that must be filled by a homeowner, and in turn a homeowner would have to be the chairperson since the homeowner group would only have two.

@Jay (C) is incorrect as proven by our free hypothetical in Question 12.

Hello, I watched the video explanation but I still don't get why the answer couldn't be D? In Question 13 F, J, & M are the ones selected and I get that however since F is selected doesn't Q have to be selected based on the 3rd rule? Does that only make it a could be true? I'm just confused.

Nah breaks down why D doesn't work above, and I don't think I could explain it any better. Read through that, and if you're still struggling, message me back.
