Binary and either or rules

Hello, I had a general question about either or rules in linear games. Are there certain indicators I should be looking for that signal a game is binary and can be broken down into two scenarios? The reason I ask is because either or rules tend to indicate binary scenarios but I have found not all of the time in logic games. I know this question may not have a black and white answer, but any insight is appreciated. Thanks!

This depends on the specific game and its rules.

For instance, if we have A, B, C, D, E, which we have to place in an order from 1 to 5, and rule #1 says that A is either in first place or in third place, then we do not have a binary, per say. We know that A cannot be in second, fourth or fifth place and if a different variable is in first place then A is in third place and vice versa.

On the other hand, if we have A, B, C, D, E, which we have to place in an order from 1 to 5, and rule #1 says that either A or B is in first place, then we can place a binary of A/B in first place.

Further, we could have a game that tells us A, B, C, D, and E are available and four of them must be placed in order 1 to 4. Now we know one is left out. So, if rule #1 tells us that if A and B are selected, then they will be first and second not necessarily in that order, we cannot place a binary of A/B and B/A in 1 and 2 because we do not know whether they are both selected.

It all depends on the game and the limitations given to you.

Hope that helps! Please let us know if you have any other questions.
