Daily Drills 2 - Section 2 - Question 5

Identify the criterion for the correct answer choice in terms of true:Each of the following statements must be true E...

"Cannot be true"

I have read through the other discussions on this question and I still do not understand why (B) "Not necessarily true" is a better choice than (C) "Cannot be true." As discussed in the other post, the logical opposite of "hot" is "NOT hot." Reading this question, I think the logical opposite of "must be true" is "must NOT be true." That is why I chose "cannot be true." "Not necessarily true" seems too weak to be the logical opposite. Can you please help my understanding with this?

@kristinasef remember, the logical opposite is the minimum required to disprove a statement.

For this reason, the logical opposite of "must be true" is "not necessarily true."

"Must be true" means that something is always the case.

To disprove this statement, I would only need to show one instance where it is not the case.

I would not need to show that it is never the case, i.e. cannot be true.

For a more in-depth discussion of these concepts, please watch the "True v. False" section of our "Intro to Logical Reasoning" video.

Hope this helps! Please let us know if you have any other questions.

I don't understand where in the question it says were looking to disprove or looking for a logical opposite. How do you get to that from the question?

I think that would come from the fact we are looking for the thing that must be true... except. That is, we are looking for the thing that does not have to be true
