Need Help

Can you explain how to set up this question? I keep getting after the third round: 1:M 2:R/J 3:S/L 4:J/R 5:L Thanks!

@kldarby so we are either going to start with odd or even. M is going to win all 3 of its matches and the remaining teams will keep the same rank relative to each other, i.e. R > J > S > L.

If we start with odd round (i.e. O-E-O), you end up with the following order:

1: R
2: M
3: J
4: S
5: L

If we start with even round (i.e E-O-E), you end up with the following order:

1: M
2: R
3: J
4: S
5: L

In both of these scenarios, J is in position 3 so (A) is the correct answer.

Hope this helps! Please let us know if you have any other questions.

One thing that wasn't really mentioned in that explanation is that the other four positions still being in the same order relative to one another (so R-J-S-L) means when one does not compete with M, the higher ranked one will always win. If R faces J in the first round and loses then they switch and no longer have the R-J-S-L order they are supposed to keep. It may be possible to fix it later with upsets, but assuming the better one wins besides matches with M makes it far easier.
