@LSATMaxer thanks for your message.

The difference between these questions is as follows:

Strengthen - answer choice strengthens the argument.

Strengthen with Necessary Premise - answer choice strengthens and is necessary to the argument.

Strengthen with Sufficient Premise - answer choice strengthens and is sufficient for the conclusion.

Hope this helps! For a more in-depth discussion of these question types as well as the strategies associated with them, please watch our video lesson on Strengthen Questions.

How do we know the difference on when to use these three variation?

@mm1127 and untitled username,

@mm1127, here's the difference between sufficient premises and
necessary premises.

Sufficient premise: a premise that, if true, makes the argument valid.
In other words, if we add a sufficient premise to the argument, it
makes the argument win. Sufficient premises DO NOT have to be true in
order for the argument to hold, but when they are true/when they're
placed in the argument, they make the argument become valid.

Necessary premise: a premise that, if false, makes the argument fall
apart. A necessary premise is required in order for the argument to
hold. In other words, If a necessary premise is removed from the
argument, it makes the argument lose. Necessary premises MUST be true
in order for the argument to stand a chance. However, necessary
premises do not automatically make the argument valid.

@ untitled username,

I recommend watching our video lesson on strengthen questions. You
will know the difference between strengthen, strengthen with a
necessary premise, and strengthen with a sufficient premise questions
by reading the stimulus thoroughly, understanding where the gaps in
the argument are, and then reading the question stem and seeing what
they're asking for. The question stem will reveal to you what type of
question you're answering, and this will help you distinguish whether
the question is a strengthen, strengthen with a necessary premise, or
a strengthen with a sufficient premise question.

Does this make sense? Let us know if you have any more questions!
