Why sufficient and not necessary?

Why sufficient and not necessary? Wouldn't a necessary premise also strengthen the argument?

@jtodeschi yes, a Strengthen with Necessary Premise is also a type of Strengthen question, so the correct answer choice will definitely strengthen.

The difference is that on a Strengthen with Necessary Premise question, the correct answer choice will also be necessary to argument, i.e. without it the argument falls apart.

On a Strengthen with Sufficient Premise question, the correct answer choice will also be sufficient to the argument, i.e. 100% guarantee the conclusion.

Hope that helps! Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Wouldn't the phrase "allow the conclusion" imply it's a necessary premise? If you remove the premise I would think the conclusion would not be allowed, implying the premise is necessary.

The key words to home in on in the question stem are "properly drawn," which implies that the assumption will 100% guarantee the conclusion of the argument. This makes this question stem a Strengthen with a Sufficient Premise question.

What questions stem would indicate a necessary premise? Versus the strengthen with sufficient premise shown?

Emil-Kunkin April 23, 2024

Sufficient assumption stems ask us what would make the conclusion right. While this can be phrased in a number of ways, the question will be asking us to find an answer choice that if true, would make the argument correct. Some common ways are to ask which would justify the conclusion, guarantee the truth of the conclusion, or justify the argument.

Necessary assumption questions are those which ask what the author must believe. These often ask about what the author assumes, the argument assumes, or what the author also believes.
