Why E?

Could you please explain why E and not C?

@sharpen7 there is nothing in the stimulus that supports (C). There is no mention of 20 percent of the present level of sulfur dioxide emissions in the atmosphere not being considered a harmful level.

(E), on the other hand, is directly supported by the stimulus. By choosing clean coal technologies, factories could cut nitrogen oxide emissions by more than 50 percent and the emission of a smaller quantity of nitrogen pollutants would in turn reduce the formation of noxious ozone in the troposphere.

Hope that helps! Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Again, I wanted to pick E but regardless of my good sense here, my logic told me not to according to what I was taught by this course. We were told to stray away from generalisations and imprecise statements. E does not mention what kind of technology (which in the passage is called PRECISELY "clean coal technology") - it simply says "the choice of technologies" and does not say what kind of technologies. To me this was imperative in my thinking because it seemed too broad of a statement to simply say "technologies" without referring to the exact or almost-exact way that the passage phrased it.

I mean, the "choice" of technology could just as well be a poor choice and a technology that may even make pollution worse.

Once again I am faced with the problem of getting an answer wrong because I listen carefully to what you are teaching here and sadly it seems that your directions about certain things are not consistent with the correct answer choices each time. Very problematic, guys! You need to fix this.

Okay, you are wrong and let me tell you why.
The last sentence in the passage says emission of smaller quantity (we don't know how much less) of nitrogen pollutants (mean NO not SD) would in turn reduce the formation of noxious ozone in the troposphere.
It says nothing about the other pollutant, sulfure dioxide which means, they are only using ONE of the pollutants to come to the conclusion, not both. Answer choice E says "choice of technologies" (again, meaning either SD or NO but not both) would in turn reduce the formation of noxious ozone in the trophosphere.
There is no inconsistency in the instruction. The inconsistency lies in the absorption and accurate reading of the last sentence in the passage, which gives you the answer that is restated in answer choice (E).
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you need any more help "reading".
