How could it not be C?

I'm confused on how the answer is E and why couldn't it be C?

@jperkett the problem with (C) is that it isn't 100% supported by the information in the stimulus.

There is nothing to indicate that all of John's friends know the same lifelong smoker.

We just know that, "All of John's friends say they know someone who has smoked 40 cigarettes a day for the past 40 years and yet who is really fit and well."

In fact, the point of this stimulus is to point out that some of John's friends are clearly not telling the truth because, "John does not know anyone like that and it is quite certain that he is not unique among his friends in this respect."

That is why (E) is the correct answer, i.e. "Some of John's friends are not telling the truth."

Hope that helps! Please let us know if you have any other questions.

how do you get from "John does not know anyone like that and it is quite certain that he is not unique among his friends in this respect" to "some of John's friends are not telling the truth"? I feel like you could conclude many things from that last statement in the passage.

@Madelyn-Luskey In this case, him being quite certain means we can take that as being true, which is what the question asks us to do. So if it's true that they all said this, but it's also true that not all of them actually do know someone like this, it means at least one (some) lied.

I do not understand why it is not D.
In passage it states all friends say they know someone who has smoked 40 cigarettes a day for 40 years.
If all his friends say this that means all are not telling the truth and all of them do not actually know someone who has smoked 40 cigarettes a day for 40 years.
So why cant it be D? Both some and most imply all. And all is used here.
Thanks!
