Let's diagram:

"Most veterinarians, and especially those at university veterinary research centers, have a devoted interest in the biological sciences."

P1: V-most-DIBS
DIBS-some-V

"But most veterinarians choose their profession primarily because they love animals."

P2: V-most-CPLA
CPLA-some-V

"Among persons who are seriously interested in biological science but lack any special love for animals, one does not find any prominent veterinarians."

ASIBSLLA = among persons who are seriously interested in biological science but lack any special love for animals

P3: PV ==> not ASIBSLLA
ASIBLLA ==> not PV

We are looking for the answer choice that CANNOT be true.

Answer choice (C) is the correct answer. We know from the third premise that there are no prominent veterinarians who are seriously interested in biological science but lack any special love for animals. Therefore, there cannot be prominent veterinarians that are "intensely devoted to the biological sciences but do not feel any pronounced affection for animals."

Question for ASIBSLLA I thought that could be interpreted as IBS (interested in Biological Science) ==> not CPLA (choose profession love animals). How do you know when to interpret statements as New or previously stated because often I come across

JayDee8732 August 2, 2017

... Statements that seem new but when I look at the explanations it's not and vice versa

Mehran August 4, 2017

@JayDee8732 doing so completely ignores the "but lack any special love for animals" portion of the statement.

You want to make sure that if you are treating variables as identical that they are in fact identical.

The more you expose yourself to Sufficient & Necessary conditions, the more comfortable you will become with diagramming them.

Hope that helps! Please let us know if you have any other questions.
