Answer choice (C) is much too strong of an answer. There is no evidence that the layout of the grocery stores have failed, they have merely alienated customers; it is still possible that they have succeeded in getting customers to pass tempting displays of other items.

Thus, answer choice (E) is correct because it states that manipulation of people (i.e. the layout of the grocery store placing the most popular items in the rear) can have unwelcome consequences (i.e. alienating their customers).

Hope that helped! Please let us know if you have any other questions.
