Why is the answer choice e) and not a)? The proposition that the public is now interested in reading & hearing about crime is an alternative explanation that supports the conclusion but I don't understand why e is the correct answer choice over a.

I'm still a little confused as to what it's an "alternative explanation to." Is it just an alternative explanation to the fact that it's not just because crime rates have increased?
