There is no alternative criterion that gets discussed in the response.

The alternative criterion set forth by Alicia is "move people with the power of the written word."

This is a different standard for greatness than the one set forth by Concetta, i.e. being the first to grasp a social issue.

Hope this helps! Please let us know if you have any other questions.

But this would advocate for answer choice D . Where as the correct answer choice C Has no mention of an alternative criterion. Can you elaborate on the distinctions between these two answer choices. Thank you

Hi @MRWESTADAMS,

Happy to help!

The issue with answer choice (D) is that Alicia does not support facts in support of the alternative criterion she suggests. Rather, she simply rejects Concetta's claim in favour of her own. By claim I mean the criteria they present as necessary marks of a great writer.

"The mark of a great writer is the ability to move people with the power of the written word [Alicia's claim - no facts to support this], not the ability to be among the first to grasp a social issue [rejection of Concetta's claim]."

As to the second part of answer choice (C), Alicia disputes Concetta's claim that Franchot was ahead of her time in understanding the social consequences of industrialization, noting that these consequences were widely understood in Franchot's day.

Hope this helps! Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Hello I am still confused on how "move people with the power of the written word" would not be considered an alternative criterion. I read the explanation you provided above but am still very confused on this one. Can you provide maybe another similar example. Maybe I am just not getting it.

Hi, I think it would be an alternative criterion. However, Alicia doesn't provide support for it, so D is wrong because Alicia only states an alternative criterion without providing any support for it.
