I got the answer correct but only by guessing. Could you please explain why D is the right answer? Thank you!

Let's break down the stimulus.

"Carl's Coffee Emporium stocks only two decaffeinated coffees: French Roast and Mocha Java."

So, if it's decaffeinated coffee from Carl's Coffee Emporium, then it's either French Roast or Mocha Java.

P1: CCD ==> FR or MJ
not FR & not MJ ==> not CCD

"the coffee he (Yusef) served after dinner last night was far too smooth and mellow to have been French Roast."

So, the coffee Yusef served after dinner last night was not French Roast.

P2: not FR

Thus, since we know that "Yusef only serves decaffeinated coffee," "if Yusef still gets all his coffee from Carl's, what he served last night was Mocha Java."

The argument concludes that under the condition that Yusef is serving decaffeinated coffee from Carl's Coffee Emporium, he served Mocha Java (since he did not serve French Roast).

C: MJ

So, the reasoning follows a pattern where A ("CCD") requires that either B ("FR") or C ("MJ") is present. If we know that B ("FR") is not present, then under the condition that A ("CCD") is present, C ("MJ") must also be present.

Now let's look at answer choice (D): "Werdix, Inc., has offered Arno a choice between a job in sales and a job in research. Arno would like to work at Werdix, but he would never take a job in sales when another job is available, so if he accepts one of these jobs, it will be the one in research."

"Werdix, Inc. has offered Arno a choice between a job in sales and a job in research."

So if Arno takes a job at Werdix, Inc. he will either have a job in sales or a job in research.

P1: AJW ==> S or R
not S & not R ==> not AJW

"he (Arno) would never take a job in sales when another job is available."

So, Arno is not going to take the job in sales.

P2: not S

"so if he (Arno) accepts one of these jobs, it will be the one in research."

Thus, under the condition that Arno takes a job at Werdix, Inc., it will be a job in research (since he is not going to take a job in sales).

C: R

So, the reasoning in answer choice (D) follows the same pattern as that in the stimulus: A ("AJW) requires that either B ("S") or C ("R") is present. If we know that B ("S") is not present, then under the condition that A ("AJW") is present, C ("R") must also be present.

Hope that was helpful! Please let us know if you have any more questions.

I was able to narrow it down between C and D can you please explain why C is wrong.
