Let's diagram:

"Leadership depends as much on making one's followers aware of their own importance as it does on conveying a vivid image of a collective goal."

P: L ==> MFAI & CVICG
not MFAI or not CVICG

"Only if they are convinced both that their efforts are necessary for the accomplishment of this goal, and that these efforts, if expended, will actually achieve it, will people follow a leader."

P: FL ==> CEN & CEA
not CEN or not CEA ==> not FL

Answer choice (C) states: "Only if one is a leader must one convince people of the necessity of their efforts for the attainment of a collective goal."

P: CPNEG ==> L
not L ==> not CPNEG

Nothing in the stimulus has given us limits on who must or must not convince "people of the necessity of their efforts for the attainment of a collective goal." Remember that the information given to us in the stimulus creates the boundaries of our knowledge. We cannot bring in any outside information.

Thus, since we have no information telling us otherwise, it COULD BE true that only when one is a leader, will that person be required to convince people of the necessity of their efforts for the attainment of a collective goal.

So, since answer choice (C) could be true, it is not the correct answer for our CANNOT be true question.

Hope that clears things up! Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Can you rule out the other answer choices because they focus on attainment and achievement of a goal rather than what the passage to me is focusing on what is necessary for leadership and to be followed?

No, attaining a goal is the same thing as accomplishing a goal. Remember, don't look at the LSAT like a math problem. You must look at everything in context. Though "attainment" and "achievement" are different words, in this passage they mean the same thing. You must work through the premises above to see whether or not we have specifically been given information that goes against one of the answer choices.

If not, then there's no reason why it couldn't be true.

Hope that helps! Please let us know if you have any other questions.

I have a similar question about answer C. The first line in the problem says that leadership depends on "making one's followers aware of their own importance"....
answer C is saying one must convince people of the necessity of their efforts for the attainment of a collective goal. Why are these not the same thing?
I'm confused on why that cannot be true because it appears like the S and N have been swapped out. I diagrammed C as:
MFAI -> L. That is just flipping & not negating the original rule of L -> MFAI & CVICG. Can you explain this a little further please?
