Clarification

For answer choice E - wouldn't the answer choice have to read "[Most of] The greatest works of art are works that inevitably satisfy all critics" in order to be correct? I am confused as to how an absolute answer choice is correct given the quantifier language in the passage?

Remember, we are not inferring this answer from the argument, we are asking which answer choice "if true" would help properly draw the conclusion of the argument.

This is a strengthen with sufficient premise question. Remember that asufficient premise is sufficient for a conclusion, if and only if the existence of the premise guarantees or brings about the existence of the conclusion. Therefore, we need to find the premise that 100% guarantees the conclusion. The way you want to attack these answer choices is two-pronged. Ask yourself, does it strengthen? If it doesn't, then cross it out and continue to the next answer choice. If it does strengthen, however, then ask yourself whether or not the premise guarantees the conclusion.

Does answer choice (E) strengthen the argument? Yes. Answer choice (E) tells us that works of art that do not satisfy all critics are not great works of art.

Therefore, since most art criticism is devoted to art works that fail to satisfy the critic, then most art criticism is devoted to works of art that are not great.

Does the premise guarantee the conclusion? Yes. As we see, the diagram of answer choice (E) is:

GW ==> SAC
not SAC ==> not GW

We know that most criticism us of "not SAC," which means most criticism is of "not GW." Therefore, answer choice (E) guarantees the conclusion.

Hope that helps! Please let us know if you have any other questions.
