We know that nutritionists recommend that people eat more fiber. The argument then tells us that ads for a new fiber-supplement pill state that it contains "44 percent fiber."

We are asked to choose the answer choice that would make the ads claim misleading due to its selection of information on which to focus.

Well, what is the focus of the ad? The percentage of fiber in the pill. The ad states that the pill has 44% fiber.

Answer choice (E) states: "the recommended daily intake of fiber is 20 to 30 grams, and the pill contains one-third gram."

If the pill only contains one-third gram fiber, then it is a negligible amount of a person's required daily intake. Thus, no one cares what percent of the pill is made up of fiber if the entire pill only contains one-third of a gram.

So, if answer choice (E) were true, then the advertising is misleading in stating that 44% of the pill contains fiber, because this makes it seem like a good amount of one's daily fiber intake can be satisfied by taking the fiber supplement pill, when in actuality the pill only contains a negligible amount.

Hope that clears things up! Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Thank you for the explanation as to why E is the correct answer! It's more clear now, however I chose D and wanted to know if it can be eliminated because it's not as strong of a weakener as E. Many thanks in advance!

Please explain why D is incorrect. If 3 pills was the serving size, then it would be misleading to say this supplement is 44% fiber because in reality you would be getting 44x3 in a serving.
