Incorrect answer explanation

Why is D incorrect? C makes sense but choosing between the two confuses me.

Hi all,

The problem with (D) is that although the first part is correct, the second part is wrong, and that's enough to make the entire answer choice wrong. Yes, it's true that the author would likely view the recent criticism as questionable. However, does the author think that the criticism is questionable because of its reliance on a currently dominant literary aesthetic that takes too narrow a view of the proper goals of fiction? No, since the conception of fiction isn't even discussed in the passage, when different conceptions of fiction are discussed beginning around line 28. The author's questioning of the criticism is for other reasons, and thus, (D) is wrong. Hope this helps.
