Explanation for D

Hello! I chose D because of lines 8-11 because in my head it sounded like it answered the question. Could someone help explain why D wouldn't be the correct answer and what evidence is used to support C? Many thanks in advance!

@Julie The question asks what was intended as a as a consequence of the constitutional protection of aboriginal rights as explicitly stated in the passage. Lines 19 - 23 read "[a]boriginal rights in Canada are defined by the constitution as aboriginal peoples' rights to ownership of land and its resources, the inherent right of aboriginal societies to self-government, and the right to legal recognition of indigenous customs. " Lines 28-30 further read "the intent of the constitutional protection is to recognize only long-standing traditional customs, not of those of recent origin," which is almost identical to answer choice C - "recognition of traditional customs but not those of recent origin.

Answer choice D "clarification of which groups comprise the aboriginal population in Canada" is incorrect because even though the passage does mention which groups comprise the aboriginal population in lines 8-11, it is implied that these groups were already understood as aboriginal before the constitutional amendment, and the passage further states that the intent of the constitutional amendment was to recognize specific rights per lines 19-23 not clarify which groups these rights belong to.

Hope that helps.
