Do we know D is correct because the first paragraph explains what typifies the classical era film that has a consistent structure that from which the musicals diverge?

This actually isn't the simplest question. But we are looking for the answer choice that the author would most likely agree with, so let's start from there.
Answer choice D says that "audiences learn to accept certain cinematic images as conventions primarily through repeated exposure to such images". This is supported by 53-58.
The issue with using the first paragraph as support for this answer is that it provides Bordwell's views, not necessarily the author's.

But isn't that line not the authors point of view, isn't the author just interpreting what the artist is inferring?
