The passage supports which one of the following statements about ethnic consciousness among Mexican Americans?

December 2014 SEC 3 Q27

Why is D incorrect? Also, I don't see how E is supported in the passage. It only suggests that "without better understanding... We cannot assume..." Thanks in advance.

Hi @kenken,

Happy to help!

Answer choice (E) is supported in lines 53 to 60.

The author tells us that there are many important variables we must understand, including patterns of bilingualism and rates of immigration and naturalization. The author also tells us that there were "...variations in ethnic consciousness these variables help to create..."

Therefore, rates of immigration and naturalization helped to create variations in ethnic consciousness. In other words, they account in part for these variations.

Answer choice (D) is contradicted by lines 51 to 52. While Mexican American leaders had strong political views, "it is not clear how far this outlook extended beyond these activists." Therefore, we cannot conclude that the leaders influenced the Mexican American population as we do not know if their viewpoints extended into the greater population.

Hope this helps! Please let us know if you have any further questions.
