Whats wrong with B?

I was torn between B and D. Originally I picked D and then I switched it to B because I didn't see explicit that there is a creation of an illusion. Please explain a bit more. Thanks.

Hi @avif,

Happy to help!

The subtractive method creates images which look like your typical idea of a brain scan where the areas of the brain that are "activated" while doing certain activities are lit up in different colours.

The passage tells us that the subtractive method obscures the fact that the entire brain is active in both the "before" and "after" pictures. The areas that are lit up are just using more oxygen than they were previously.

Therefore, the images would not support Uttal's view that mental processes are properties of a more general mental activity that is distributed throughout the brain, as suggested by answer choice (B). This is because the images seem to suggest that there are distinct regions of the brain which are responsible for certain mental processes, even if the images obscure what may really be occurring in the brain.

Answer choice (D) is correct because the images creates this illusion that brain functions are localized as they obscure the fact that the whole brain is active in both pictures.

Hope this is helpful. Please let us know if you have any further questions.
