Thanks for the question! So we’re being asked here for a modification of their point of view that the author thinks that humanists should accept. Well, we should remember that the author is suggesting relevant stuff like this in the last paragraph, so we should look at the last paragraph for answers. Now take a look at the sentence between lines 44 and 47. We’re told there that “…the humanities in fact profit from attempts at controlled evaluation.” In other words, controlled evaluation can be good for the humanities.

Now take a look at (C), which tells us that the modification is “an acceptance of the application of controlled evaluation to the examination of human values.” Well, we just said that the author would think that controlled evaluation could be good for the humanities. So it makes sense that the author would recommend this modification for the humanists, and so (C) is the correct answer choice.
