June 2001 LSAT - Section 4 - Question 18

If the Quigley arrives at some time before the Rockville, then the Wooster must arrive

Can someone explain to me why Wooster can not be 6th?

I understand why it can be 4 but I also see that it can be 6 so is there a good explanation for why I should have picked 4 instead of 6?

Hi @Nicholas0299,

Thanks for the question! Actually, it’s not possible for W to be in sixth in this question (and actually, W can never be 6th in this entire game, no matter what you do). So we know that Q is going to come some time before R. Can W arrive sixth?

Well, let’s say that W comes in sixth. Based on the second rule, we know that Y is in fourth, since only Y or W can be fourth.

_ _ _ Y _ W _

But now look at the third rule! S comes after W but before Y. And that’s not possible here! We know that the other has to go

W—S—Y

But now that W is behind Y, this is impossible. So putting W in sixth means that we have to break rule 3, and so we can’t put W in sixth.

Hope this helps! Feel free to ask any other questions that you might have.
