Why can't A be the correct answer? Also, how can we know that the author is advocating a certain interpretation? Thanks.

Hi @kenken,

Thanks for the question! So we’re being asked here for the main purpose of the passage. What’s the point of it, what’s the big picture here? Well, let’s take a look at (A), which tells us that the passage is here to critique an artist’s style. Now, what is a critique exactly? It means that there’s going to be an analysis of her style, looking at some positives and negatives, and it’ll possibly focus more on the shortcomings of the style. But is this what happens? No. Her style is described, that’s for sure, and some of it is explained, but is it really critiqued? Not really, and that’s why (A) can’t be the right answer here.

Now let’s take a look at (D), which says that the passage’s main purpose is to advocate an additional interpretation. Well, we know that the passage tells us in the beginning that Kahlo’s works’ “political content has been less studied” (line 7). And the passage then goes on to analyze her works with a political lens. And so that’s the additional interpretation going on here, that her work “champion[ed] Mexico’s struggle for an independent political and cultural identity” (lines 9-11). And that’s the interpretation that’s being advocated throughout the passage, and that’s why (D) is the correct answer.

Hope this helps! Feel free to ask any other questions that you might have.
