Hi @fable,

Thanks for the question! So this is going to be a main point question, so it’s good to think about what the answer might be in our heads before we take a look at the answer choices. What is this passage talking about? Well, the author’s basically saying something along the lines of “it’s not necessarily true that the art today reflected the preferences of the elites who might have sponsored it.” And (B) just says this, in fancier words, that “sociohistorical interpretations of art that claim that art merely reflects the ideals and values of the elite classes are overtly simplistic.” That’s kind of the point that’s being driven at throughout this whole passage, since art often didn’t represent the elite classes. So it’d be a simplistic view to think that it did all the time.

(D), on the other hand, tells us that the main point of the passage is to tell us that sociohistorical critics have to engage in a form of Freudian analysis to justify the claim that works of art embody the ideals of the elite. But this answer choice is just a bit too narrow. Is this the main point of the passage? It’s certainly something the author touches on, but isn’t made to be a main point of the passage since it’s not talked about throughout.

Hope this helps! Feel free to ask any other questions that you might have.
