Approaching substitution question
I am always lost on how to approach these and I do not want to waste time testing out every answer. In this one it was nice the first answer was correct, but what is a good approach for solving these quickly?

One approach that would indeed work here would be to look for something that was a deduction of the initial rule. The initial rule knocked out three of the five possible things that could come after X, and the final rule knocks out Y, so we know there is only one thing that can come after X.
