I think I figured it out--- it's easiest if you keep track of the order AND which items are in/out. I set it up like this:
______/ out: __
123456

So if we know O is in 2 and L is in 6, then we can try to figure which 2 must be out:
1) M because if L is in, M is out.
2) P because we know that in order for P to be in, it must be between O and S. We know where O is, and since it's in space #2 there isn't space for P and S to be to the left of O, so then we can try to lay them out to the right... but S can't be in space #2. So, then you know that P must be out, too.

So now we know that the rest must be in: N,O,R,S,V and can follow the rules to fill 'em in.
we have: _O___L
-N must be in #5:
_O__NL
-R can't be in #6 because L is there-- so R must go in 1.
RO__NL
-S can't go in number 4, so it has to go in #3.
-that leaves #4 for V.
