For questions like these for example saying: if x and y are in places 1 and 2 for how many of the spaces can you fill? how do you go about these questions? Do they count the spaces they already gave you? I chose the answer 8 because I didn't include the two spaces they gave us in the question. Please explain.

It does feel weird, but you should always look to the plain language of the question. Here the question asks how many we can determine, and we can indeed determine all ten. The question doesn't ask how many in addition to J, it just asks how many total.
