Why is D incorrect?

Is it perhaps because of the portion that states "many languages"? Otherwise, I can't seem to find a potential problem with the answer. Could you also explain why the correct answer is

I also chose D and had difficulty finding why it is incorrect. I hope someone is able to explain this.

Not a tutor, but when I was answering this question, I took issue with D's language - specifically, "modern language". Nowhere in the passage did it describe cuneiform or the evolution of tokens as a modern language, or even resembling a modern language.

But it did describe the languages discussed as "abstract". That was an indicator for me that this answer choice was not supported and that A was significantly more likely to be correct.
