I chose the answer choice that talked about the argument taking for granted the media giving as much as exposure as they should to the important issues of the day. Why is this wrong and what is the reasoning behind the correct answer ?

The argument tells us that those who claims the media has too much influence over opinions are wrong, because if media were too narrow it would have too much power, but it isn't too narrow. That is, because we negate the sufficient condition then the necessary condition cannot be true. This is a major flaw, and it is exactly what C references.
The argument doesn't take for granted that the media gives enough airtime to important issues. That simply isn't in the passage.
