Example 5 Answer C: Assigning "not" to moral and/or intelligent

"not moral and intelligent" in accordance with the lesson = "not moral, and intelligent". How did we make that assumption that the answer wasn't insinuating "not moral and NOT intelligent"? Thanks!

If you diagram this one, we have

If a democracy functions well, the electorate is moral and the electorate is intelligent

Democracy function well--> electorate moral and electorate intelligent

The contrapositive of this is

Electorate not moral or electorate not intelligent-->democracy not function well

With C, we get the contrapositive. Remember, when you have compound statements, when you do the negate them, you change "and" to "or" and also negate each of the terms. Thus, C is correct.

When negating or statements, change the "or" to "and" and negate each statement as well.
