It seems like the passage is comparing two other methods in contrast to the prevailing view. I don't see how the author is trying to offer a modification.

The author is only comparing one view to the prevailing view, that view is that pathogens can be successful even if they kill their hosts. The author doesn't really offer anything in support of the prevailing view, but modifies it to make the above statement possible.
